in June 2006. However, as important as all
of these accomplishments are, its Yvonne’s
dedication to empowering the women in her
community, and beyond, that offers the greatest
insight into her character. She is never
as fulfilled as when she is harnessing her
many talents for the benefit of others.
In 2007, she will be proudly announcing
the establishment of The Boice Awards, which
will honor South Florida women who are dedicating
themselves to the betterment of their community.
“When we nurture and support a
woman who is positively influencing her
neighborhood, the impact far exceeds the
local geography,” said Yvonne. “Our
nation, and the world at-large, are united
by the positive energies in each community.
It’s this life force that aids us
in overcoming our differences and keeps
us focused on our commonalities.”
This personal philosophy of peace and
prosperity is something Yvonne witnessed
first-hand when she was one of six women
selected by the U.S. Department of State
to attend a conference for businesswomen
in the Middle East and North Africa in
Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.
Yvonne’s business acumen and her
international presence as Chair of the
Palm Beach International Film Festival,
were key reasons why she was chosen to
participate, but it’s her ability
to form meaningful connections with women
that made her journey a true success.
Yvonne relates on the human level, fostering
relationships based upon the feelings
and desires we all share. The love of
family and need to provide for them is
paramount to women. And she knows the
struggles that can be entailed. After
her husband’s death, she was left
with the responsibility of managing a
new shopping center that was only 30%
occupied. Heartbroken and overwhelmed
by the daunting job ahead, she placed
her focus on making progress each and
everyday. In time, with innovation and
determination, she surmounted the obstacles
and created an inspiring success story.
Currently, the Shoppes are 100% occupied
with 25 clients, including an Outback
Steakhouse, and grossing over 3.5 million
dollars annually in revenue.
Finding these human commonalities made
it easy for the women in the Middle East
to approach Yvonne for advice on how to
improve their businesses. One of the most
significant outcomes of her journey was
the relationship she formed with Moroccan
delegation, which took her advice to launch
a film contest focusing on their nation’s
gender issues. Yvonne was then invited
to the Marrakesh Film Festival to speak
about women’s role in the media.
This friendship will continue to prosper
as plans are made for the winning Moroccan
film to debut at the PBIFF in 2008.
While arrangements are underway for that
momentous occasion, Yvonne continues with
her many other endeavors including overseeing
the continued expansion of her travel
business, and serving the community through
her roles as Vice-Chair of the Centre
for the Arts at Mizner Park, President
of the Boca Raton Republican Club, Chair
of the board of overseers of Lynn University
and providing her insight as a board member
of the YMCA of Boca Raton and South Palm
Beach County, Boca Raton Educational Television,
the Boca Raton Roundtable, the Boca Raton
Philharmonic Symphonia.
On a personal note, Yvonne is a devoted
mother to Lauren, a practicing attorney
living in the Washington, D.C. area with
her husband, world-renowned astrophysicist,
Dr. Randall Knowles Smith.
